BUSHCRAFTS GUIDE TO BUSH KNIVES
Choosing a Knife
The steel of a bush knife needs to be strong and durable. It needs to be hard enough to maintain a sharp edge when used to carve wood,
but not so brittle as it snaps when stressed. Most bush knife blades are made from carbon steel, a tough and durable material. Sophisticated blades
are made from inner layers of hard steel for strength and a sharp edge, wrapped by an outer layer of more flexible steel to keep the blade from
being too brittle.
Knife handles can be fixed in a multitude of ways. Some are bolted, some glued, others rivoted. Materials include wood, bark, leather,
antler and plastics. I prefer handles assembled from natural materials that are renewable, biodegrade back to nature when we are finished with them,
and usually offer a higher degree of comfort to hold. The knife handle should be about the same length as the blade. What's most important is that the
knife handle fits your hand well, so that it is comfortable for you to use over prolonged periods and does not give you blisters.
Knife Responsibility Code
Below are some tips on using your knife safely. Remember: Look after your knife, and it'll look after you!
